If you were to take the words “born to dance” and put them into human form, Kamo Mphela would certainly be the personification of that phrase. South Africa’s dancing sensation and amapiano vocalist, Kamo Mphela was born on the 29th November 1999 and today she is best known as the ‘Queen of Performance’ within the amapiano space, a popular sub-genre of house music in South Africa. She made a name for herself when videos of her dancing at events went viral on social media. Her energy was tangible, her love for the art form palpable. Her rise to stardom was ordained by the entertainment gods because at the altar of her success was the one quality that’s bound to take you further than any other; passion. Kamo Mphela released her debut single ‘Suka Emabozeni’ in 2019, which became an overnight sensation. Her follow up singles such as ‘Siyavuma’ and ‘Amanikiniki’ were even bigger hits, with the platinum-certified hit single “Nkulunkulu”cementing her position as one of the most popular artists in South Africa and in 2022 she took to the world with a feature on the Black Panther soundtrack album. A picture of professional artistry, Kamo’s decision to perform to her own music brings an innovative aspect to her career. Kamo Mphela has become an inspiration to many young female artists in South Africa and has helped put the spotlight on the talent. She keeps elevating on her life’s purpose and how she delivers that to the masses. In following her dreams Kamo did not change for the world, she let the world catch up to her and today not even the sky’s the limit with upcoming international performances such as Afro Nation, a national dance festival tour, a clothing range in the pipeline and new music in 2023 Kamo Mphela continues to dominate as a formidable icon.
